Our cities and towns are full of fascinating “Experiences” that we can’t wait to show you. Let’s begin in the heart of our county with the Town of Petrolia and Village of Oil Springs – both rich in culture and history and where you can see the beginnings of North America’s first commercial oil well, established in the 1800’s. The influence these towns had on the oil industry is world renowned. The town of Petrolia flourished with exquiste mansions, opera house, and more! It is a must see that is surrounded by expansive conservation areas and scenic outlooks. Just to the east is the village of Alvinston, where you can see honey bees at work as well as the entire honey making process. Ontario’s first and international award-winning meadery is here as well. All around our County are conservation areas –15 in fact – offering yet more adventures with scenic trails for hiking and bird watching everywhere, and with events such as the maple syrup festival, the Sydenham River Canoe Race there’s always a reason to enjoy our outdoors!

As we navigate north through rural towns such as Watford, Warwick and Wyoming, farm fresh food, festivals and fairs greet travelers in the friendliest of ways. Relax and enjoy every moment, because sometimes the simple things in life are best.

Let’s keep moving north through the towns of Arkona, Forest, and Thedford where fruit orchards are numerous, and the rolling scenery lets you get away from it all! A stop in Arkona at the iconic Rock Glen waterfalls offers a relaxing break or an exciting hunt for fossils dating back over 350 million years.

As we continue on our journey north we meet our great west coast – Lake Huron with many great stops along the way. Kettle & Stony Point First Nations bring you a culture older than Canada itself with Pow Wows that highlight this in ways that are truly inspiring. Here we find one of the world’s rarest formations, the kettle concretions. These rocks and mineral formations are everywhere – truly a site to see!

Next stop is Port Franks. Its towering sand dunes are spectacular. Enjoy the beautiful white sand, infinite shallow waters with sand bars, and breathtaking sunsets. For boaters, the harbour has achieved international Blue Flag status, one of only three in Canada!

The Pinery Provincial Park is just up the road and is one of Ontario’s largest Provicial Parks with over 600,000 visitors annually. Magnificent sand dunes with boardwalks guiding you to miles of sandy beaches. Wildlife abounds in this rare Carolinian forest, making the numerous trails adventures in themselves.

At the northernmost point of our county we find Grand Bend. This town has a history of being a get-a-way summer destination. Its Main Street is lined with shops, restaurants, galleries, attractions, nightlife and more, and leads you directly to its famous beach with its recently acquired 3.5 million dollar facilities and Blue Flag status. But there’s more! Hear the roar of the engines at the high performance drag strip at the Grand Bend Motorplex and exhilarating stock car race track at the International Speedway. Or take in a show at Huron Country Playhouse for professional theatre offering the finest in musicals, comedies and dramas every year. This is a summer vacation destination like no other!

At the opposite corner of our County are the southern towns of Port Lambton, Sombra and Courtright, all situated along the picturesque waters of the St. Clair River. Here you will find quaint shops and restaurants, museums to explore and numerous waterfront parks to relax in… an escape from everyday life you’re sure to enjoy. Afterwards, venture across the St. Clair River on the Sombra ferry for a visit with our friends in the USA.

Just slightly south of Port Lambton, another ferry awaits to take you across the St. Clair River to Walpole Island. This is the home of the Chippewa, Ottawa and Potawatomi First Nations people. The area is well-known by hunters, fishermen, and trappers that travel from far and wide to experience this unique ecosystem – the richest and most diverse wetlands on all of the Great Lakes.

Travelling north but inland slightly, we come upon the town of Brigden, home of our biggest fall fair. Every year, the Brigden Fair draws tens of thousands of spectators to view everything from livestock competitions, to monster pumpkins and trucks, to midways and live entertainment – an experience you just don’t want to miss.

Back to the St. Clair River and to the town of Corunna, where we find more shops, restaurants and ferry access to our island on the river – Stag Island – a cottage-living oasis.

Our final stop is the City of Sarnia and the Village of Point Edward. Here, our twinned Blue Water Bridge – one of the busiest international boarder crossings in Canada – connects us to our American friends. At the foot of the bridge is the popular Point Edward Waterfront Park, one of many parks along the St. Clair River that offer spectacular views of the St. Clair River, Lake Huron, with all the ships, sailing vessels and even wind surfers. It is also the site of the OLG Casino Point Edward. With over 450 slots and 30 gaming tables it is one of the most exciting places to play this side of Las Vegas! We have a lot to offer here. Not just great shops, restaurants, beaches and parks, but also professional theatre, concerts featuring acts like Elton John, festivals such as the Mackinac Race, sporting events such as the International Powerboat Races and the yearly Silver Stick hockey tournaments.

Our newest addition – the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery – is a Category A-ranked gallery, with works by the Group of Seven and featuring some of the best artists working in Ontario today, many with national and international reputations.
